A Walk With The Kids

A Walk With The Kids

Aside from cooking my next favourite past time is to explore the Irish countryside with my husband and my two girls. When I was at home (Boyle Co. Roscommon) over Christmas we were lucky enough to get a few nice days to go exploring.

We took my mum along a walking trail and hiked up to Carrowkeel a Neolithic passage tomb cemetery in the south of County Sligo just outside Boyle. The tombs are between 5400 and 5100 years old (3400 to 3100 BC), so that they predate the Pyramids on Egypt's Giza plateau by 500–800 years.

We get the usual I’m tried after the first few steps from my 3-year-old Jessica, but with a little distraction she forgets moves on. There was plenty to ice along the way to slip and slide so that entertained them as we walked.

The view from the top is magical and you can see Lough Arrow. There are exactly 14 passage tombs and we made it to the first. This gives us the perfect excuse to go visit again!

It is such a pleasure now to be able to share our hiking adventures with the girls! Here are a few clips from the day... Enjoy!
