Step 5 - Making Mealtimes More Enjoyable

Step 5 - Making Mealtimes More Enjoyable

Get the children involved!

By simply placing the dinner in the center of the table and allowing an older child to serve themselves or a younger child decide how much they want, this can really make mealtimes more enjoyable. Getting the children involved doesn't have to wait until dinner is served either. Ask your kids for help in the kitchen to get them excited for the meal.

Simple tasks such as washing vegetables or setting the table are ideal, and for older children why not let them help out by peeling or even chopping vegetables and potatoes, or grating some cheese. It couldn't be easier! They might even try and food they previously rejected.

In our house our favorite meal is Chicken Fajitas and the girls really love making their own wrap! Check out the recipe below.

Recipe - Chicken Fajitas

Makes 3 Adult servings
2 Chicken Breasts sliced
1 Onion sliced
1 Red Pepper sliced

For the Marinade
1 heaped tbsp paprika
1 tbsp of ground coriander
A pinch of cumin
Pinch of salt and pepper
2 medium garlic cloves, chopped finely
Olive oil
Juice of 1 lime
4-5 drops of Tabasco sauce (optional)

Grated Cheese
Sweet Corn
Crème Fraiche or Natural Yoghurt

  1. Turn your oven on to 200 C and place your tortilla’s in a steamer or wrap in tin foil and place in the oven.
  2. Prepare your marinade and add your Chicken, Onion and Pepper.
  3. Heat your griddle pan until very hot and add contents to the pan keeping them moving. Allow to cook for 6-8 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. As the pan is very hot it is important to keep turning the pieces so they don’t burn.
  4. When everything is cooked place the contents into a bowl - place in the centre of the table along with heated tortilla’s, salsa, crème fraiche, sweet corn and cheese.
  5. Most importantly make sure your child makes up their own fajita with a little help from adults. I guarantee this will become a favourite weekly meal.

Storage and Texture

4mth+ – Not suitable
6mth + Finger Food – Offer as a finger food making sure to offer each piece separately so your child can pick each piece up. Don’t be afraid of offering spices it is great to get your child used to spices from an early age. Perhaps leave out the Tabasco sauce for a child less than 1 year.
Children over 12m+ and the rest of the family: Allow your child to make up their own fajitas with a little help.
